banglor beat chennai, big up set

Chasing Chennai’s 146 for five Bangalore reached 149 for four to secure victory with seven balls of their innings remaing.
Dravid and Pandey put on 72 runs off 58 balls for the third-wicket before Pandey was bowled by left-arm spinner Shadab Jakati, in the 13th over, for 48 runs off 35 balls with seven fours with Bangalore on 94 for three.
Pandey and Dravid produced a marvellous display of elegant stroke play with both batsmen happy to play some expansive drives but Bangalore found themselves in a spot of bother when Dravid was out leg-before to off spinner Muttiah Muralitharan for 44 off 39 balls with six fours.
Dravid’s departure left Bangalore on 110 for four in the 16th over still needing 37 runs off 29 balls for victory but Ross Taylor and Virat Kohli took 15 runs off the 17th over, bowled by off spinner Suresh Raina, to put Bangalore back into the driving seat.
Taylor (17 not out) and Kohli (24 not out) plundered 39 runs off just 16 balls for their unbroken fifth-wicket stand as they made sure that their team would be the one to meet the Deccan Chargers in the IPL final at the Wanderers on Sunday.
Bangalore had been in early trouble after they slipped to 22 for two with the South Africa pair of Jacques Kallis and Roelof van der Merwe back in the dug-out for single figures scores before Dravid and the 19-year-old Pandey launched their rescue effort.
Earlier, an opening stand of 61 runs between Parthiv Patel and Matthew Hayden helped the Chennai Super Kings to their final total.
However, Chennai would have been disappointed not to have capitalised on the fine start that their openers gave them as five batsmen reached double figures but no one scored more than Patel’s brisk 36 off 27 balls with seven fours.
Bangalore captain Anil Kumble won the toss and elected to bowl but he was initially left rueing his decision as the left-handed Patel tore into Bangalore’s bowling.
Patel was particularly strong on the pull and he upstaged his experienced opening partner Hayden (26) as the pair put on 61 runs off 42 balls for the first wicket with the first-wicket fifty-run partnership coming up off 32 balls.
Hayden fell when he lifted a slower ball from seamer Vinay Kumar to Pandey at deep midwicket and Patel followed soon after, trapped lbw by Kallis, as Chennai slipped to 69 for two in the ninth over.
Matters did not improve for Chennai as Suresh Raina (20) got a leading edge to a delivery from medium-pacer Praveen Kumar with keeper Mark Boucher snaffling the catch.
MS Dhoni played a watchful innings of 28 runs off 30 balls before he holed out to Vinay Kumar at long-on off the bowling of left-arm spinner Roelof van der Merwe in the 18th over before Albie Morkel slammed the last ball of the innings for four to end unbeaten on 20 off 17 balls.
Vinay Kumar was the most successful bowler, with figures of two for 38, while Van der Merwe returned the economical figures of one for 23 off four overs.
